Texas District Area IX to Oberserve 109th Anniversary of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at PVAMU

The members of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the Texas Area IX chapters will celebrate its 109th Anniversary with a special Founders' Day Observance Program on December 6, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in the Johnson Phillip All Faiths Chapel at Prairie View A&M University.

The event is being hosted by the Epsilon Tau Lambda (Prairie View), Eta Gamma (PVAMU), Pi Omicron (TAMU), Pi Alpha Lambda (College Station) and Sigma Gamma Lambda (Cypress/Katy) Chapters.

The speaker is for the program is Mr. Kyron Green, the Director of Information Technology for Nutrabolt Inc. Mr. Green holds the Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Green formerly served as the IT Policy & Security Programs Administrator and IT Administrator for the Department of English at Texas A&M University.

He also served as a church administrator, board member for Faith and Family Agape Ministries and is the Lead Servant for Eastgate College Ministry at Aldersgate UMC in College Station. He was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. through Pi Psi chapter at the university and is now a member of Pi Alpha Lambda Chapter, where he served as Treasurer, Vice President, and President.

Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

Since its founding, the fraternity has expanded its reach with more than 1,600 collegiate and alumni Chapters in the Americas, Africa, Asia, Caribbean and Europe, with more than 250,000 members of all races.

Other participants include the Boys Scout Troop 1906 who will post the colors and The Alpha Singers.

A reception will follow the program in the Room 108, John B. Coleman Library. We look forward to your joining us for this momentous event.

Today, November 26, Americans at home and abroad are celebrating Thanksgiving 2015 with family, friends and loved ones to reflect on the many blessings they have received over the years. As we reflect on the day history has it that the first Thanksgiving was proclaimed by President George Washington on November 26, 1789 as a day of gratitude for the adoption of the Constitution. In this season of national thankfulness, take time and express appreciation for a way of life that, despite all of its faults, has given the U.S. the best the world can devise. We have all have much to be thankful. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

The Prairie View Volunteer Fire Fighting Association, Inc. is hosting two major events leading up to the 2015 Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. First the association launches its Annual Food and Toy Drive from November 10-December 19. Drop off places are Fire Station on 502 Ellen Powell St., Prairie View every Wednesday from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.; Prairie View City Hall on US Business 290 and the Prairie View Federal Credit Union on University Drive during business hours. November 28th is Small Business Saturday® in America, a program created by the American Express Company in 2010 to help business owners with their most pressing need-- getting more customers. Since then, shoppers continue to rally in support of small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Thanks to American Express, FedEx and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for support of the program. Go out and support your small businesses.

PVAMU Alumni have a lot to be thankful for this year. First congratulations to Dr. Dawn Dubose on her selection of Principal of the Year presented by the National Association of Black School Educators at its recent meeting Houston, Texas. Dubose is principal for HISD-Red Elementary and is a 1998 graduate of PVAMU. Congratulations also to Ernie Collins, a recipient the of 1890 Universities Career Exemplar In augural Awards from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. Collins, a 1969 graduate, is among 19 recipients from historically black land-grant universities receiving the award. Collins retired from the ExxonMobil formally Humble Oil and Refinery Company in 2003 after 34 years of service.

A VIEW FROM THE HILL: Congratulations to the PVAMU Panther Football team and coaches on a successful 2015 season. Under the leadership of Coach Willie Simmons, his first season, the team amassed a 9-2 season and 9-1 SWAC record, the first in decades for the Panthers. The team impressive record has caused an all-out petition to the NCAA for consideration of an at-large post season play. At press time a decision has not been made. The PVAMU Family is hopeful that the 2015 Panthers will be selected.

Don’t forget to support Radio-thon 2015 hosted by KPVU FM 91.3 at Prairie View A&M University. The station is celebrating its 34th Anniversary. It began its on-air service on November 26, 1981 under the leadership of Shirley Staples as the laboratory for the Communications Department. The staff of the Johnson Phillip All Faith Chapel and student organizations at PVAMU will host its 2015 “Gift for Tots” on Dec. 5 at 10:00 am. Major General (Ret) Julius Parker is the commencement speaker. General Parker is the President and CEO, J.P. Industries, Inc. and the JADOR Enterprises Inc., consulting firms located in Phoenix, Arizona. Parker and his wife Dorothy June are proud alumni of Prairie View A&M University. Parker graduated in 1955 with a commission as second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and retired as the highest ranking African American Intelligence Officer in the history of the army. The Parkers children, Julius Jr. and DaVita also graduated from PVAMU. Television Personality, Religious and University Professionals and Student Athletes to receive Power 100 Awards

Prairie View, Texas – November 1, 2015 – The members of the Collegiate 100 of Prairie View A&M University will present the Power 100 Awards at its Black Tie Scholarship Awards Gala on November 14, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Willie A. Tempton Student Center Ballroom at university.

The 2015 honorees are the Reverend William ‘Bill’ Lawson, Founder and Pastor Emeritus, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, Miss Courtney Gilmore, Anchor for KPRC Channel 2 TV Houston, Dr. Felicia Nave, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Mrs. Sherylle Fuller, Administrative Assistant, Medical Academy, Dr. Freddie Frazier, Retired Professor of Mathematics, Miss Destiny Velez, Miss Puerto Rico and Bowling Team member and the Honda Campus All-Star Championship, Women’s Track & Field Teams of Prairie View A&M University. The new members will also be present and receive their pins as the organization celebrates its 21st anniversary. The organization was created at Prairie View A&M University in 1993.

Miss India Foster, Editor-in-Chief of The Panther Newspaper at Prairie View A&M University is the Host of the Program. The gala is a major event for the Collegiate 100 which was re-chartered at the university in March 2011. Funds raised from the event will support the chapter’s mentoring programs, scholarships to students and other special programs.

Past Power 100 Award recipients are State Representatives Alma Allen, Senfronia Thompson and Sylvester Turner, Mayors Frank D. Jackson and Michael Wolfe, Professors George Brown and Kelvin Kirby and the PVAMU Women’s Basketball, Bowling and Soccer, and the Men’s Track and Baseball teams.

Current and past programs that have impacted the university community include the Career Expo, held prior to the University Career Festival, Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon distribution, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Mentoring the 100 Way with the Freshmen, Toys for Texas Children Hospital, College Tour for elementary through high school students and Voter Registration Drives.

The Collegiate 100 is an auxiliary organization of the 100 Black Men of America and is sponsored at Prairie View A&M University by the 100 Black Men of Metro Houston, Inc. The mission is to support the 100 in its Four for the Future programs: mentoring, education, health and wellness and economic empowerment to improve the quality of life of the community.
