Prairie View Today Update

The members of the First United Methodist Church in Prairie View will hold its Summer Hats and Brims Extravaganza on August 17 at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Key Street in Waller. The event runs from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Door Prizes will be awarded. For information, contact Katherine Reed at 936-857-3584.

Congratulations to Dr. Michael McFrazier on his new appointment as Vice President for Administration at Prairie View A&M University, effective August 1. McFrazier is the former vice provost for academic affairs and dean of the Northwest Houston Center. In this new position he will serve as chief of staff, reporting directly to the president, and is responsible for providing leadership for a broad range of academic and non-academic matters.

Congratulations to Dr. Terence Hicks, the new dean of the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education at PVAMU. Prior to joining PVAMU, Hicks served as department chair and director of the School of Education Research Center at Fayetteville State University and a Research Fellow for the National Institutes of Health, National Center of Minority Health and Health Disparities.

The Men of St. Francis of Assisi will host its Men’s Prayer Breakfast on August 24 at 8:30 a.m. at the church on 204 Dooley Street in Prairie View. Mr. Nelson Bowman, Executive Director for Development at Prairie View A&M University is the speaker. The free breakfast is open to all the men of the community. Congratulations to Brenham Office Supply and C & E. Specialties on their recent awards presented at the 2nd Annual HUB Vendor Banquet on August 10 at Prairie View A&M University. The two companies were singled out for their outstanding customer services in providing products to PVAMU. The awards were presented by Mr. Jim Nelms, the HUB Coordinator and Dr. Corey Bradford, Senior Vice President for Business Affairs at the university. This is the first event of its kind where the buyers are honoring the sellers for their excellent services. The countdown is on for the seventh Annual Fireman's Red and White Ball on August 24 at Prairie View A&M University. The committee is seeking sponsors and donations for the event. Honorees for the Red Hot Summer’s Night in August Ball include Elton Mathis, Tamara Brown and Paris Grady. Other honorees are Belinda Lewis, Chad Cryer, Rodney Gray and LaToria Fowler. The event, sponsored by the Prairie View Volunteer Fire Fighters, Inc., is seeking sponsors, underwriters and advertisers. The Waller County Citizens Assistance Coalition will host a School Supply Give Away on August 24, 2013 for students in grades K-12 for both Waller and Hempstead Independent School Districts. August 14 marked Prairie View A&M University’s 137th year of creation. It was on August 14, 1876, when the fifteenth Texas Legislature created the Agriculture and Mechanical College of Texas at Bryan and the Alta Vista College for Colored Youth on the Kirby Plantation. After several name changes, including Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical College, legislature endorsed Prairie View A&M University with legislative action on August 15, 1973, thus making the “A&M” a symbol for state. The View from the Hill: Prairie View A&M University, along with the Prairie View A&M University National Alumni Association and the Student Government Association hosted its first Summer Alumni Induction on August 14 in Willie A. Tempton Sr., MSC Ballroom. The event marked the bridging of current graduation candidates into Alumni status. The program is sponsored by the Special Programs Director, Isis McCraw at irmccraw@pvamu.edu. Mr. Carl Young of Atlanta is the PVAMU National President.

Congratulations to Dr. George C. Wright on tenth anniversary as president of Prairie View A&M University. Dr. Wright was officially named the seventh president on August 15, 2003. August 17, 2013 will be a great time in the lives of more than 400 students as they receive their respective degrees at the Summer Commencement of Prairie View A&M University.
