Meet Dr. Mary S. Brown Hawkins 

Chairwoman, Board of Directors

Prairie View Federal Credit Union

Dr. Mary S. Brown Hawkins in the Chairwoman of the Board of Directors for the Prairie View Federal Credit Union, a position she’s held since February 2021.  Dr. Hawkins has been on the board since 2016 and has served on the Supervisory Committee and has been a member of the Credit Union since 1965.

Dr. Hawkins holds the Bachelor and Master’s degree in Mathematics Education from Prairie View A&M University and the Doctor of Education in Mathematics from the University of Houston.

Dr. Hawkins began her teaching career in mathematics with at Bonham High School.  She later moved back to Prairie View and taught Mathematics in the Hempstead, Royal and Houston Independent School Districts.  Following her public school career, she joined Prairie View A&M University as an instructor for Freshman Mathematics, a Research Scientist, and Program Manager for the Enhanced Skills Training Program for the United States Army ROTC Cadets, and Professor for Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education, preparing the next generation teachers of Mathematics.

Her professional affiliations include serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Mathematicians; president Phi Delta Kappa International Fraternity for Educators Prairie View Chapter and a charter member of the Research Association of Minority Professors (RAMP), particularly at historically Black Colleges and Universities. She also served on the editorial board of the RAMP Journal and the Journal of Mathematics Education.

Dr. Hawkins’ social and civic engagement includes membership with the Prairie View A&M University National Alumni Association and the local Chapter where she serves as Treasurer and Co-Chair of the Alumni Scholarship Golf Tournament, former President of the Epsilon Lambda Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and graduate advisor to the Omega Gamma Chapter at Prairie View A&M University, the Prairie View Athletic Club and a member of the Robertson County Rehabilitation Center Limited Liability Company in Texas.  Dr. Hawkins is very active with the Saint Katherine Drexel Catholic Church of Hempstead, where she serves as Chair of the Parish Pastoral Council and a member of the Altar Society and president of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court 2084.

Dr. Hawkins is the wife of the late Dr. Frank T. Hawkins, former Head of the Department of Mathematics at Prairie View A&M University and Founder of RAMP, and parent of two sons - Gerald and William and daughter Dorovenia Nicole Koch, twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
