Dr. Smith holds the Doctorate of Education in Science Education from the University of Houston, M.S. Degree in Biology Education from Northwestern University, the B. S. Degree in Horticulture Science from Southern University at Baton Rouge; and further studies at the University of Texas at Austin and Argonne National Laboratory in Idaho Falls, Idaho and the Oak Ridge National Laboratories in Nashville, Tennessee.
Dr. Smith has a tremendous history and experiences in public service, teaching and community involvement. As we will be commemorating the 149th Anniversary of the reading of the Emancipation by General Granger in Galveston on which freed the slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865, Dr. Smith will speak on his background, training and experiences in relation to the freeing of the slaves in Texas and Louisiana, his hometown, and how we can improve the quality of life in our communities.
