Destiny won the title in July and became the first student in Prairie View’s history and athlete in Southwestern Athletic Conference history to compete for the Miss America title.
The 2016 Miss America Pageant airs Sunday, September 13 on ABC television from Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall. Houston area viewers can tune into KTRK Channel ABC 13 at 7:00 p.m.
Prairie View A&M University was the first HBCU to secure a franchise with the Miss Texas and Miss America organization in 1970 when Margaret Sherrod competed at the Miss Texas Pageant. In 1984, Dellenor Miles became the first Miss PVAMU to make top ten as the fourth runner up to Miss Texas. The university no longer competes in the pageant.
Destiny, originally from Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, and a graduate of L. D. Bell High School in Hurst, Texas, is a star player on the three-time SWAC championship Bowling Team. Velez is a sophomore Business Management Information Systems major and plans to pursue the Master’s degree in Business. Her career ambition is to become an executive director of an information technology enterprise.
Destiny performed an Acoustic Drum’s routine for her talent as Miss Trujillo Alto in the Miss Puerto Rico pageant. She will reprise that performance in the Miss America Pageant. Her platform #Upstander, addresses issues of self-esteem and empowerment for the less fortunate among the nation. Destiny beat out 12 contestants in the local pageant is among 52 women vying for the Miss America title on September 13, 2015. As Miss Puerto Rico, her activities include public appearances across the archipelago of Puerto Rico.
Among her many honors are the titles of Miss Fort Worth, Miss Teen Tarrant County, Miss Teen White Rock Lake and Miss Teen Fort Worth and Hunt County. Her scholastic honors include the William M. Green Scholarship, PVAMU College of Business Scholarship; NCAA Athletic Scholarship, PVAMU Excellence in Academics Award and the President’s Honor Roll and a member of the National Honor Society.
Destiny says: "I am so blessed to not only represent Puerto Rico at the Miss America pageant but also Prairie View A&M University as a student-athlete. The Miss America pageant is in its 95th year and is the largest scholarship organization in the world, granting more than $200 million to young women to further their education.
