Famed Designer Harrison visits Childhood Friend in PV

Mrs. Jimmie Poindexter was the consummate host for Mr. Charles Harrison III, on his nostalgic visit to Prairie View the early residence of his father, the famed designer Charles Harrison, Jr. and winner of the Smithsonian’s Cooper National Design Award. Charles Jr., the Director of the Jazz Orchestra at UCLA paid a visit to the campus on June 15.

Poindexter was all smiles as she shared photos and her childhood experiences with Charles Sr. who grew up on ‘Diaper Row’ and left the college at 14 when his parents moved to Phoenix, Arizona. She also included Charles in her book Campus Children.

In addition to his duties at UCLA, Charley is a legendary multi-faceted composer and arranger who is directing the course of jazz. His CD, Keeping My Composure received critical acclaim on its release. Incidentally, Charley was in town with his son attending a baseball camp in Montgomery and accepted the invitation to come to the campus.

After dining and fellowship at Bistro’s 1876 in the Panther Plaza, Charley received a guided tour of the campus. By the way, Charley’s dad was the first Black executive with Sears, Roebuck and Company, rising from designer to manager of the entire design group in 1968. He was involved in designing more than 750 consumer products, including the portable hair dryer, toaster, stereo, Craftsman power tools, the first plastic trash can and most notably the Model F View-Master.

Joining Mrs. Poindexter for the visit were Dr. Danny Kelly, Dean of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Mark Phillips, Head of the Music and Theater Program, Phyllis Earles, University Archivist, Maurice Owens, Charles’ friend and yours truly, Frederick Roberts.

A VIEW FROM THE HILL: The Prairie View A&M University Cooperative Extension Program hosted the team of the Waller County Strategic Planning Committee in its 3rd leg of the county precinct-wide forums. Jimmy Henry, Program Leader introduced the team which included Judge Carbet Trey Duhon, Commissioner Jeron Barnett, Vince Yoakum, Stephan Gage, Dr. Danielle Green, Roena Toney, Dr. Noel Estwick, Lloyd Hebert, Dr. John Cooper, Ronnie McDonald, Mary Anne Placentini, Dr. Terence Finley and Bridget Ross. The purpose of the forum was to gain citizens input in relation to the future of the county over the next 25 years. The event was very interactive as participants were asked to jot down their visions for the county and conducted the SWOT analysis to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threat to the county. Judge Duhon stated, “I am very pleased with the information gathered thus far and I look forward for more citizens input. I want to encourage everyone to get involved in the process.” Persons not participating in the sessions can complete the Waller County Strategic Plan Survey at https://www.surveymokey.com/r/9M2YZ9B.

Until next week, in the words of President Lyndon B. Johnson, "enlightened loyalty requires that each citizen take the trouble to learn about, to discuss, to think through, the crucial issues of our time." Remember the struggle continues! Keep the news and achievements coming to prairieviewtoday@yahoo.com or P. O. Box 2906, Prairie View, TX 77446.
