PRAIRIE VIEW ALPHAS REIGNS IN NATIONAL AND TEXAS DISTRICT AWARDS

Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the Epsilon Tau Lambda Chapter in Prairie View and the Eta Gamma Chapter at Prairie View A&M University are reveling over its win of the National Charles H. Wesley Brotherhood Award for 2022 and the Texas Conference of Alpha Chapters (TCAC). The National Award was captured by besting out the other four regional winners and the TCAC Award was won out of seven eligible chapters in the District.

Building on the success, the Chapters won, what it terms as the Triple Crown for Service, the first round of competition at the Texas Council of Alpha Chapters District Convention held on February 9-11 at the Sugarland Mariott Convention Center. Several members of both chapters were highly engaged in the activities of the convention, including Mark A. Spivey, president of Epsilon Tau Lambda and Marcus Spratley, president of Eta Gamma Chapter.

At the closing Black and Old Gold Banquet, the Eta Gamma Chapter was named College Chapter of the Year, Strolling Champions, First Place - Scrap Book; 2nd Place in the Debate (Ryan Tucker and Joe Darden) and College Bowl (Joe Darden, Erick Smith, Garrett Warren and Francis Utaegbulam) Contests; Tyler Valentine won 2nd Place in the Oratorical Contest and Marcus Spratley was named College Brother of the Year and Miss Black and Old Gold TCAC – Chloe Tolbert (Eta Gamma) and 2nd Runner to Miss Black and Old Gold – Gabrielle Orji (Epsilon Tau Lambda);. The chapters won the coveted the Charles H. Wesley Award for alumni and college relations for the fourth consecutive year. The Alumni Brother of the Year Award went to Frederick V. Roberts for his service to the fraternity and community at large. The chapters and the brothers will compete in the Southwest Region Convention in Fort Worth, Texas on March 30-April 4, 2023.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the first fraternity for Black college men was founded on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The chapters’ win was based on their participation in the organization’s national programs and special initiatives, to include support for A Voteless People is a Hopeless People (voter education), Go to High School, Go to College, Project Alpha (male mentoring), Brother’s Keeper (service for senior Alphas and widows), Boy Scouts of America (Troop 1906), Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the March of Dimes at the university and the in the community at large.
