Ron Leverett, a proud native of the picturesque state of Arkansas, holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from the esteemed University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). His journey took him to Texas in 1973, where he assumed a faculty position at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) after completing graduate work at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.
During his remarkable 16-year tenure at PVAMU, Leverett not only imparted knowledge in Instructional Technology but also served as the university's Videographer and Media Technologist, contributing his skills to various facets, including athletics.
While originally drawn to Prairie View for a career opportunity, Leverett quickly recognized the untapped potential of this small, rural college town. His commitment to its possibilities led him and his wife to establish permanent residency by purchasing a plot of land. In a unique turn of events, when the Leveretts decided to build their home, Ron sought collaboration with the College of Engineering and Architecture at PVAMU. This encounter became a memorable class project for graduating seniors, and even after more than 40 years, Ron proudly shares that Architecture students at PVAMU designed his home.
His passion for the city's development plan propelled him to successfully secure a seat on the City Council, where he dedicated three years of service. In 1984, Ron was elected Mayor and held the position for an impressive 9 years. Throughout his tenure, he worked tirelessly with the council and the community to implement impactful initiatives, including improving inter-local governmental relationships, relocating and automating City Hall, establishing the city's first Fire Department, securing crucial resources such as the first ladder fire truck, advocating for a Post Office, upgrading water and sewage systems, establishing the first Police Department, and hiring the city's first licensed, state-certified Utilities Director.
In 2022, Ron Leverett reentered public office, winning a third term as Mayor, a testament to his enduring commitment to the growth and prosperity of Prairie View. He continues to be a dedicated advocate for the city's progress, eagerly anticipating further development that mirrors the success of the university and surrounding rural communities.
Ron is married to Dr. Earline Leverett and they have one daughter Lindsay.
