Ash Wednesday is on Valentines Day

Traditionally, February 14 is recognized solely as Valentine's Day, one when love is shared with the giving of roses, chocolate and even wedding proposals. However, this year, Ash Wednesday falls on February 14th with a different emphasis and commitment. A time to reflect and share our thanks, for this time that we remember the greatest sacrifice.

How appropriate that the holiday that is symbolized with a heart is the day that we remember our own mortality and the loving sacrifice that God made for us.

One is the romantic love that we associate with Valentine’s day, but the other is the greatest love; the love of the Father for us, so great was the sacrifice, the beloved Son given as a sacrifice for us.

St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, 204 Dooley Street, Prairie View invites the members of the community to share in the imposition of Ashes at its service on February 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the Church.

As the lenten season begins, let us look into our own hearts and ask – What kinds of sacrifices can I make to extend the love of God to everyone? Let today be the day you give up who you have been for who you can become.

May God be with us all.
