Remembering Commander Robert M. Dean, United States Navy, (Ret)

CDR ROBERT MURRELL DEAN, USN (RET) was born on February 20, 1951, to Johnnie and Olivia (Nash) in Colfax, Louisiana, and was the third of nine children (Jimmie, Ronald, Wayne, Johnnie, James, Eddie, Brenda, and Gwendolyn). He was affectionately known to loved ones as "Bobby." As an adolescent, he moved to Beaumont, Texas, where he was raised by his aunt and uncle Naomi (Nash) and Jacob Wallace.

Thursday, January 4, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. Omega Service by the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. at New Pleasant Green MBC on 1319 Grove Street, Houston, TX 77020.

Friday, January 5, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. The Funeral Service at the Second Baptist Church, Woodway Campus, 6400 Woodway Drive, Houston, TX 77075

Interment immediately following the service in the Houston National Veterans Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038

Repass at 4:00p.m. in The Woodlands Country Club, 100 Grand Fairway, The Woodlands, TX 77381

BOBBY accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at West Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. Bobby graduated in the top 8% of Hebert High School Class of 1969 and went on to matriculate at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), where he received a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) academic scholarship and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in History (Pre-Law) and a teacher's certification. As an undergraduate student, Bobby served in the NROTC and was part of the first line of Eta Gamma initiates into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in 1970, 1ater becoming a Life Member. He also continued to support his beloved Prairie View A&M University as an active alumnus and lifetime donor.

AFTER becoming a Commissioned Naval Officer in 1972, Bobby's military career soared. He dutifully served his country for over 20 years as a decorated Naval Flight Officer. During his career, Bobby received numerous National Defense, Navy Achievement, Meritorious Service, and Vietnam Service Awards, including a US Navy Command Ashore insignia and three Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medals. His last active-duty assignment was as Commander and Commandant in Charge of the PVAMU Navy ROTC Unit, where he had the responsibility of inspiring and commissioning the next generation of Naval Officers.

AFTER retiring as a Naval Commander in 1993, Bobby continued to inspire the next generation as a Naval Science Professor at PVAMU, a teacher, an Assistant Principal, Principal, and Administrator in Houston ISD and Alief ISD being awarded Principal of the Year in 2006 (Worthing High School). As a lifelong learner, Bobby also earned post-bachelorette degrees in Human Resources Management (M.A. Pepperdine Univ.) and Education Administration (M.S. Ed., PVAMU). He continued to earn flying hours through volunteer work and became a Colonel in the State of Texas Civil Air Patrol (an assignment he never relinquished).

WITH Bobby, there was never a dull moment. He spent his sunset years on the go-flying recreationally as a certified private pilot, officiating youth sports, fishing, golfing, boating, traveling the world, and spending time with family. Bobby received his heavenly wings on December 22, 2023, surrounded by family.

BOBBY is preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie & Olivia Dean; Naomi & Jacob Wallace; and brothers, Ronald, Johnny, & Eddie Wallace.

BOBBY leaves to cherish his memory his childhood sweetheart and wife, Sharel Patterson Dean; two children from a prior marriage-Reginald (Cathy) and Tamara; three grandchildren (Madelynn, Jamisen, and Morgan), his best friend and "honorary brother" since the third grade, Arthur Lynn" Ray Wilson, and a host of family, life-long friends, and colleagues.

We thank God for the time we shared, the countless memories, heartfelt laughs, and endless generosity. Until we meet again, rest in knowing that the work you've done speaks for itself. Rest well, Commander. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to The Air Safety Institute's AOPA Foundation, Inc.
