Mr. Higgs was married to Hattie Olivette Jackson (deceased) of Arkansas and that union produced two children, Cherie (Calvin Singleton) and Marcus (Amecia Smith) and three grandchildren Carlton E. and Calvin Clinton, III Singleton and Morgan Alicia Higgs.

A VIEW FROM THE HILL: The Prairie View A&M Foundation Gala held on October 13 at the Hilton Hotel in Houston on Post Oak is now history. And what a success it was? More than 500 alumni, staff, friends and guests enjoyed the festivity, with NBC’s 2’s Anchor Kahmbrell Marshall as the Host. Among those bringing greetings and saluting the guests were Mr. Roy G. Perry, Foundation Chairman and Dr. Ruth Simmons, president of Prairie View A&M University. Dr. Simmons also expressed thanks to Mr. Perry, who also honored the newest deans to the university from the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences and the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering. Dr. Simmons became the 8th president of the university on November 9, 2017. From all account the event was a huge success and is expected to bigger and better in 2018. The 2018 Homecoming for PVAMU family is in full swing. The festivities runs October 21-27 and was ushered in with a spirit filled Gospel Fest on October 21 with featured artist Gospel Singer/Songwriter/Producer and Minister Fred Hammond along with Social Media Sensation and Gospel Comedienne Miss Sherlene. Several student performers provided the opening singspiration with song and praise dancing.
The events continued on October 22 with special events around campus, to include a Special Memorial Service for the Notable Playwright, Director, Teacher and mentor Dr. Theodis Shine, former head of the Theater Program at Prairie View A&M University. Among the persons paying tribute to Shine were Dr. Lucius R. Wyatt, retired Head of the Department of Music and Theater, Dr. Dianne Jemison Pollard, Dean of the Honors College at Texas Southern University, Eileen Morris and Rachel Dickson Artistic Directors for the Ensemble Theater, Andrea Bell Miller, former student, Dr. Mark Phillips head of the Department and Dr. Danny R. Kelly, Dean of the Brailesford College of Arts and Sciences.
Special readings were provided by Dr. John L. Cornelius and Dr. Vicki Seldon from the Music Department. The King and Queen's Ball highlighting Mr. & Miss Prairie View A&M University will be on October 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Opal Johnson Smith Auditorium. Other events include the Homecoming Concert with Boosie, Hip Hop Artist, followed by the Stage-breakers Step Show (Oct. 26), parade (Oct. 27) and the football game with the Panthers and the Alcorn University Braves on October 27 in the Blackshear Field Stadium at 2:00 PM. The Prairie View A&M University National Alumni Association will hold its Fall Alumni Meeting on Friday, October 26 at 1:00 p.m. in the Alvin I. Thomas Auditorium (Administration Building). All alumni are invited to attend and to share their thoughts and reflect on thier days on the Hill. The Annual Homecoming Banquet will be in the evening at 7p.m. in the Ballroom of the Willie A. Tempton Sr. Student Center. The association will honor and recognize the Golden Anniversary Class of 1968 with special medallions. Featured entertainment for the evening will be provided by Alumnae Sonya Freeman, fresh from her off-broadway tribute to the legendary singer - Phyliss Hyman.
